In autumn 2009, a group of more than 900 businesses from across the world issued an unprecedented joint communiqué. In their sights were the political leaders entering negotiations at December’s UN climate change conference in Copenhagen.
In just two pages, it sets out the business case for an ambitious, robust, effective and equitable UN climate framework, and warned of the consequences for business if a credible deal was not reached in Copenhagen.
The Copenhagen Communiqué is the clearest statement yet of why and how the business community must aim for a low-carbon economy.
“The problem of climate change is solvable – many of the technologies required are available today while others can be developed if the right incentives are in place. The policies needed are relatively clear, and the costs of transition are manageable, even in the current economic climate. The one thing we don’t have is time. Delay is not an option.”
